Tasting Note 11/8/09: ’07 Layer Cake Malbec

8 Nov

Greetings JOTT.com Family!

I am very excited about the wine I am drinking tonight! I had not intended to blog a tasting note this evening. I mean, after all, I am glued to the TV and completely opposed to anything that would distract me from this Sunday night battle between my Eagles and the stinking Cowboys.

But this grown up tailgate consisting of spicy tilapia tacos with black bean and roasted corn salsa paired with the perfect Malbec — introduced by my dear friendand partner in Wine Crimes the “Wine Newbie” — drove me to fire up the laptop and let my fingers do the talking between delectable sips.

2007 Layer Cake Malbec 4 JOTT Glasses!

A JoyofTheTable.com Favorite!

The fruit for this supple, intense wine that explodes with notes of blackberry, cinnamon, a little chocolate, spice and everything nice comes from a vineyard that is perfectly placed near the Mendoza River in Argentina. I was pleasantly surprised when the Newbie bragged about her latest purchase. I was doubtful because … well, she’s the Newbie reviewer here at JOTT.com so Dandelion Wine suits her just fine.

But I was more than pleasantly surprised. And you will  be too. Especially if you find this wine on sale at your local wine and spirits shop. It seems to retail for about $19.99 but we found it for $9.99 because it was a “Chairman’s Selection” at the PA Wine & Spirits stores.

Have you tried the Layer Cake Malbec? If so, let me know!

I’m off to pump this one and enjoy it again tomorrow.

Ciao for now,

Tonya

    Tonya:

We are thrilled you enjoyed the wine and thank you so much for the rating. It’s always appreciated; we expect the wine is good when you have it, but, it’s always up to you!

      Layer Cake Wines,

The pleasure was mine indeed and the kudos are well deserved. I look forward to picking up bottles of the other varietals in the near future. And Mendoza is definitely on the list of places to visit for wine adventures.

      Best,

      LCW,

We are having a bit of a Layer Cake Malbec crisis in PA!

I’ve tried 4 different Wine & Spirits shoppes and the wine is out of stock, it seems, in and around Philadelphia and Harrisburg. Help! I might have to start a petition or form a protest outside of the Chairman’s office at the PLCB if this continues. 🙂 But seriously. Demand is high and I’d like some on hand for tastings and parties during the holidays.

My new mantra: “Must. Have. LC Malbec. For Holiday. Parties. STAT!”

      Cheers!

I have been favoring Argentinian and Chilean wines, mostly Malbec’s and Carmenere’s for the past couple of years, finding a number of surprisingly good choices, all between $10 and $20. I first had Layer Cake’s Malbec (07) while at a Morton’s steakhouse outside of Philadelphia, and enjoyed it immensely. The deep fruits, the right amount of dryness, and a very smooth finish. I found it to be among the best of this variety. Difficult to find here in NJ, but definitely case-worthy.
